Architecture has been a major passion of mine since I was a child. From my first visit to an architectural wonder, I knew I wanted to pursue it as a career. From the complexity of a building’s design to the beauty of a unique interior, my heart was set on learning how to create buildings captivating to the public. As I grew older, my dreams of becoming an architect did not diminish but grew, and I’m proud to say that I recently achieved my goal. As I reflect on my journey and journey of those who have come before me, I often wonder what drew us to architecture.

For many, architecture allows them to shape and create a living art form. This is particularly true when considering urban design, which is often used to improve the appeal and visibility of a city’s skyline. Architects often have the benefit of being able to see their finished works for decades or even centuries after they leave their mark on the world. Similarly, modern architects are often challenged to come up with creative solutions to difficult building needs using limited space, materials and budgets.

For others, they are inspired by the sustainability and eco-friendly aspects of the profession. To be able to create a building that fits in with the environment and uses limited resources to achieve its maximum efficiency impacts generations to come. Architects are trained to look closely at their building’s purpose, location and resources and then design a structure that will have the least strain on its setting. Architecture has the potential to be a sustainable profession, as many people continue opting for green buildings.

Others may be drawn to architecture because of its ability to be both creative and practical. Architects must use ingenuity to create a structure that meets its purpose while also respecting its surroundings. Architects must also take into account stricter conditions, such as zoning rules, building codes and budgets. Patience, attention to detail and excellent problem-solving ability are essential qualities that one must possess to be a successful architect.
