The Open System Interconnection (OSI) model is a conceptual model that characterizes and standardizes the communication functions of a telecommunication or computing system without regard to its underlying internal structure and technology. Its goal is the interoperability of diverse communication systems with standard protocols. The model partitions a communication system into abstraction layers. The open systems interconnection (OSI) model is a conceptual model created by the International Organization for Standardization which enables diverse communication systems to communicate using standard protocols. The model is based on seven layers which are organized in a logical order. The lowest layer is the physical layer which deals with the physical aspects of the communication such as the electrical signals. The next layer is the data link layer which ensures that the data is transferred correctly between two nodes. The third layer is the network layer which is responsible for routing the data. The fourth layer is the transport layer which is responsible for end-to-end delivery of the data. The fifth layer is the session layer which is responsible for maintaining the communication session. The sixth layer is the presentation layer which is responsible for formatting the data. The seventh layer is the application layer which is responsible for providing the interface to the application.<\/p>\n

The Physical layer of the OSI model is responsible for the transfer of bits — the 1’s and 0’s which make up all computer code. This layer represents the physical medium which is carrying the traffic between two nodes. An example would be your Ethernet cable or Serial Cable.<\/p>\n
