Does Purdue Have Architecture?

To find out the answer, we spoke to Professor Étienne Belémé, an architect and professor at Purdue’s College of Liberal Arts. He said that Purdue does indeed offer an architecture major, with concentrations on design and construction in addition to a number of unrelated studies like interior design and landscape architecture. He also stated that students can take courses on the basics of architecture, such as the history of design and architectural principles.
Additionally, Professor Belémé noted that while a Bachelor of Science in Architecture is available, the university doesn’t offer a Bachelor of Architecture program that certifies learning in professional architecture. However, the school currently offers a minor, a Master of Science program, and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) program in architecture, as well as a range of student organizations. For example, the Association of Architecture Students (AAS) can be joined by any student with a major or a minor in architecture.
When asked about the quality of architecture programs Purdue offers, the professor shared his positive feedback. According to his observations, students of Purdue’s architecture program are well-versed in both theory and practice. He was also very impressed with the efforts of the faculty to create an environment that encourages learning as well as creativity.
We also spoke to some of the students who were interested in architecture at Purdue, and observed that completing a degree here doesn’t necessarily guarantee one a potential career in the field. While some find positions with prestigious architecture firms after graduation, others move to fields related to their studies, such as urban planning or property development. Nonetheless, it seems that the education students receive from Purdue gives them a substantial leg up against competition and aids them in their endeavors to pursue an architecture-related career.
It is worth noting that there are a number of other options for those who are interested in studying architecture. The nearby Ivy Tech Architecture Program in Lafayette, Indiana is one such option, offering Associate of Applied Science degrees in Architecture, Building Maintenance Technology, and Construction Technology. Aside from this, other cities close to Purdue such as Indianapolis, South Bend, and Fort Wayne are home to various universities that offer architecture degrees.
