Why Do I Like Architecture

Interests

I have always had a passion for architecture. As a child, I was fascinated by the intricate details of buildings both old and new. I watched them rise off the ground and wondered at the thought and skill that allowed these incredible structures to come to life. This passion has stayed with me and has only grown over the years. Architecture is now an integral part of who I am and I feel a deep connection to it whenever I pass by a structure I’ve been moved by.
Since then, I’ve taken a deeper interest in architecture. I’ve studied it extensively, learning about the different practices and architects that have shaped history. I understand the importance of building for function and for beauty and respect the balance of the two. I also appreciate that the ideas within a structure can be more far-reaching than their physical representation, from their sociocultural elements to the feelings and narratives that they evoke.

Curiosity

My curiosity for architecture has taken me across the globe, and I’ve been able to witness many of the incredible works of art crafted by the talented minds throughout history. Traveling and exploring has allowed me to understand the value of innovation and the importance of learning from the past and using it to your advantage.
There is something special about the connection between the physical form of a structure and its function and social purpose that I find incredibly compelling. I love that I can decipher the message or narrative within a structure and see the unique way in which it has been crafted and communicate itself. Whenever I see a new building, my mind immediately begins to consider the idea behind its concept and form, and I’m also keen to investigate further.

Aesthetics

For me, the aesthetics of architecture are especially important. I’ve always been drawn to beautiful structures and my appreciation for design has only grown over the years. I’m fascinated by the way the lines and shapes of a building can tell a story, and how its design can communicate emotion and inspire others.
I treasure the beauty of various materials and I’m especially attracted to monochromatic color palettes, augmented with different textures and patterns. I always look for creative uses of materials and I love when a building not only functions well but also looks good.

Experiences

My appreciation for architecture has also had a large effect on my day-to-day experiences. I’m often people watching and watching the way in which architecture affects their daily lives. It fascinates me to observe a building and its unique quirks and to hear the stories of the people that inhabit it.
Experiencing the beauty and wonder of great architecture is something I always look forward to, no matter where I am. It’s a way of grounding myself and I love that feeling of being connected to a place and its culture. It’s also a reminder of our shared humanity, that no matter where you come from or what kind of structures we have in our environment, we all appreciate good design and art.

Inspiration

Architecture has also inspired me in many ways, providing new ideas for my other creative endeavors. Drawing on the energy of a building or an area has allowed me to develop my own ideas and create something new. I also take inspiration for my day-to-day life in my appreciation for the beauty of architecture. It has motivated me to strive for higher standards and to assess how my work can be both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
Architecture also provides an opportunity for me to express myself, through my own unique interpretation of the form and design of a building. I find that I’m able to transfer my thoughts and feelings into a structure through my own interpretations and create a lasting experience.

Connection

I’ve often found myself drawn to places in architecture for the simple reason of its connection to people. For me, a building can represent more than just its physical elements. It can represent an idea, a culture, a feeling, or a moment in time. I love being able to appreciate a structure not just for its external beauty, but for its connections to the people who inhabit it or have experienced it.
I also see it as a way to connect with people from all backgrounds. By appreciating great architecture, I’m able to understand different cultures and appreciate their aesthetic as well. In a way, this allows me to extend my own knowledge and understanding of a culture and its place within the world.

Engineering

An integral part of my appreciation for architecture is understanding the engineering and science behind a structure. The challenge of constructing a building, welding complex materials together, or designing a foundation requires knowledge, understanding, and great skill.
In my view, the engineering aspect of architecture is equally important to its design and aesthetics, and I’ve always been fascinated by the different ways that engineers attempt to solve construction problems. I’m passionate about the technology and research behind these ventures, and I’m inspired to continually learn more about the many engineering practices that help create these incredible works of art.

Architectural Movements

My understanding of architecture has largely been informed by the different movements throughout history, from Classicism to Modernism, and their contribution to contemporary culture. Observing how different schools of design have evolved and influenced each other has allowed me to further understand the value of design and art, as well as the social and cultural purposes of structures and their significance to humanity.
The architecture of different eras has taught me the importance of respecting the context in which a structure stands and learning from the past in order to create something unique and powerful. I’ve been able to apply this to my own work, while also appreciating the architects, engineers and builders of the past and their incredible contributions to our environment.

Education and Advocacy

Architecture has opened my eyes to a variety of different possibilities and I’ve found myself using it as a platform for further education and advocacy. I understand that being informed on the different ways in which architecture affects our lives is essential to our progress and I believe that, as a collective, we can create a better environment for everyone.
I’m also a firm believer in the importance of understanding who you are as a designer and staying true to your own beliefs, while creating something beautiful and functional. As an architect and advocate, I try to educate myself to ensure that I have the knowledge necessary to push the industry forward and to provide the best possible solution for any project I embark on.

Reflection

Architecture has enabled me to continuously reflect on my own life and actions, allowing me to appreciate the simple beauty and ingenuity of a structure whilst firmly linking it to the people and the environment in which it exists. It connects us with our past and our future, and this realization has had an incredible impact on my life.
Without a doubt, architecture has shaped me in ways I didn’t anticipate, from my career aspirations to my creative outlook. It’s shaped the way I view the world, ignited my creativity and pushed me to learn more and strive to be the very best I can be. That is the most important realization of all.
